The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says a man pretended to be a lawyer and charged clients more than $81,000 in legal fees.

News outlets report 76-year-old Michel V. Diago was arrested Tuesday and charged with practice of law without a license and breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

Arrest warrants say Diago provided legal services from June 2014 to October 2018, even though he doesn't have a license to practice law. Diago was supposedly using the money to help with adoption and naturalization processes, but spent the money on himself instead.

It is unclear if Diago has an attorney who can speak in his defense.
