The American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section held its 2019 Southeastern White Collar Crime Institute meeting at Chateau Elan Winery & Resort in Braselton on Sept. 5-6. About 175 attendees registered for the conference, now in its sixth year. The first day touched on a range of subjects, including electronic discovery, big data, international criminal enforcement and health care fraud enforcement. Attendees also heard discussion on sentencing issues. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr gave the keynote address on the second day, offering a state of the enforcement agenda for the state of Georgia. A panel of United States attorneys, moderated by BJay Pak, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, discussed white collar enforcement under new Department of Justice leadership. The highlight of the day was a fireside chat with Noel Francisco, solicitor general of the United States, moderated by Amy Levin Weil of The Weil Firm. Francisco gave an annual review of Supreme Court and significant appellate court decisions. The conference ended with a discussion into ethical guidance in conducting internal investigations, titled " The Intersection of Yates and Upjohn."
