Gov. Brian Kemp's Judicial Nominating Commission released the names of 101 judges and lawyers who have been nominated to fill an opening on the Court of Appeals of Georgia created by the August death of Judge Stephen Goss.
The list of potential candidates includes at least 26 judges.
This is Kemp's first appellate court opening since he became governor in January. Gov. Nathan Deal's JNC, when faced with large numbers of candidates, often chose a smaller number to interview and recommended a shortlist from those candidates.
Hovering over this decision is the state judicial election set for May 19, 2020. An opinion of the state Attorney General states that a new judge must face the first election that is more than six months after his or her appointment. So Kemp's appointment would have to run in May if tapped before Nov. 19 and in 2022 if chosen after that date.
Nominees have until Oct. 25 to complete the JNC's application. Typically some nominees don't fill out the papers.
