Gov. Brian Kemp's Judicial Nominating Commission received the names of 79 nominees for a seat on the Supreme Court of Georgia being vacated by Justice Robert Benham.
To be considered for the job, the nominees must turn in applications with information about their legal practices, education and other background by Feb. 21. The JNC then interviews some of the applicants and recommends a short list to the governor.
Last year, 101 people were nominated to fill a Court of Appeals vacancy, and 56 submitted applications. Kemp has not announced which of six finalists recommended by his commission will get the job.
Benham had indicated last year that he would finish his term, which ends Dec. 31, prompting four candidates to start campaigning for the rare open seat on the high court. Eight other candidates started running for the Court of Appeals to replace a judge who was seeking Benham's seat.
But after candidates raised $1.6 million for their races, Benham announced late last year he'd resign on March 1. That made the race for his seat moot, shrank the appeals court race and left Kemp's appointment as the path to Benham's seat.
The 79 nominees, according to the JNC, are:
