Gov. Brian Kemp named a new judge Friday for the Bulloch County State Court in the South Georgia city of Statesboro.

Bulloch County Solicitor General Joseph Cushner, who currently prosecutes misdemeanors in state court, will fill an opening on the bench there, Kemp announced.

Cushner was elected solicitor general in 2016 when his predecessor retired. He had previously served as assistant solicitor general in Bulloch County and an assistant district attorney in the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit.

Previously, Cushner worked as a legal aide for former Lt. Gov. Casey Cagel, and as an intern in the Cobb County District Attorney's Office. He was a member of the Leadership Bulloch class of 2012. He's a Statesboro native.

Cushner earned a political science degree from the University of Georgia in 2006 and a J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2010. The governor called him a "proud Double Dawg."

"I would like to thank Governor Kemp for this opportunity to serve the people of Bulloch County in this new capacity," Cushner said in an email to the Daily Report Friday. "It has been an honor to serve Bulloch County as Solicitor, and I look forward to serving as Judge."
