Gov. Brian Kemp isn't a lawyer, but he has several to advise him on legal matters and judicial appointments. His Judicial Nominating Commission last week recommended four finalists for a vacancy on the Supreme Court of Georgia caused by the retirement of Justice Robert Benham.

You can review the finalists' applications at the links below. They include resumes, writing samples, lists of important cases they've handled and more. If you're game, let us know what you find interesting and important in them. The JNC has redacted personal identification information from the applications.

Assuming Kemp chooses from the short list, his selection will join Justice Sarah Warren to bring the court to two women and seven men.

Benham was the court's first African American member. With his departure, one other court member, Chief Justice Harold Melton, is African American. Among the finalists, Colvin is African American, McMillian is Asian American, and Doyle and LaGrua are white.

Kemp has been weighing a separate short list for an open Georgia Court of Appeals seat since last November.

Kemp also is aiming to fill a third appellate court seat, that of Justice Keith Blackwell, who announced last month that he will resign in November. The JNC has sought nominations for the seat, but two lawyers who planned to challenge Blackwell in the May election claim the choice should be left to the voters. A hearing on the dispute is set for Friday.
