With 93% of the votes tallied, it appears incumbent Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Kathy Schrader will be heading into a runoff election against Gwinnett Magistrate Judge Deborah Fluker.
Out of more than 80,000 ballots, Schrader garnered more than 38%, compared with the 21% Fluker tallied at that point. Fluker is one of four challengers looking to unseat the incumbent.
Grayson civil and criminal solo practitioner B. Thassanee "B.T." Parker, was third with almost 18% of the vote. Suwanee solo Christa Kirk, a former Gwinnett County prosecutor, drew 12% of the vote; Kelly Kautz, a criminal and family law practitioner in Suwanee and also a former Gwinnett prosecutor, trailed with 10% of the vote.
Schrader, who was first elected to the superior court bench in 2012, drew a group of challengers sensing an opportunity after she was charged with computer trespass and stood trial earlier this year.
A mistrial was declared in February after a jury was unable to reach a verdict. Schrader is still facing a possible retrial on the charges, which stem from her 2019 hiring of a private investigator to monitor her court computer after she became concerned it had been hacked.
Schrader has voluntarily stepped aside from her judicial duties while the charges are pending.
In another closely watched Gwinnett judicial race, incumbent Superior Court Judge Randy Rich trailed challenger Tamela Adkins, with 59% of the vote favoring Lawrenceville family law specialist Adkins.
Rich, who was elected to the Gwinnett State Court in 2004, has served on the superior court bench since his appointment by Gov. Nathan Deal in 2016.
Democratic voters in Gwinnett also apparently decided that Patsy Austin-Gatson, a supervising attorney with the Gwinnett County solicitor, should take on longtime Republican District Attorney Danny Porter in November.
Austin-Gatson faced off with fellow Democrat and Lawrenceville criminal lawyer Wesley Person in the primary. Austin-Gatson took nearly 59% of the vote to Person's 41%.
The only Gwinnett State Court judge facing opposition, Judge Shawn Bratton, handily cruised to reelection with nearly 65% of the vote.
