Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, who is seeking his seventh term, faces a runoff Tuesday against challenger Fani Willis, a former veteran prosecutor in his office, following an upset primary where Willis garnered 42% of the vote to Howard’s 34%.

The shooting of Rayshard Brooks, who is Black, just three days after the primary and Howard’s decision to charge two white police officers with multiple felonies five days later catapulted the DA’s race into the national spotlight while protests over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police are sweeping the nation.
