A moratorium on residential evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic that took effect in March saw dispossessory filings plummet in Fulton County, and not unexpectedly they began to rise again following its July 24 expiration.

Lawyers who handle evictions and dispossessories said they were bracing for an onslaught of new filings, but Tuesday’s announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of a new, four-month eviction moratorium effective Friday may once again jam the brakes on the ability of landlords to eject tenants who can’t pay their rent—if it survives legal challenges.
