Alcovy Judicial Circuit Judge John Ott threw out combined complaints Tuesday from Confederate supporters seeking to stop the Newton County Commission from removing a Civil War memorial statue from the middle of the Covington town square.

The lawsuits were filed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, General George “TIG” Anderson Camp #2038, Georgia Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans and T. Davis Humphries. The judge ruled they had failed to show an injury, and in any case could not overcome the formidable doctrine of sovereign immunity that protects Georgia state and county governments from lawsuits.
