One of the thorniest questions in reopening jury trials amid the pandemic is whether witnesses should wear masks, because, lawyers say, jurors must be able to see a speaker’s facial expressions when evaluating their testimony.

The federal court for the Middle District of Georgia got around that question this week by securing clear, plastic masks for witnesses to wear while testifying. That adjustment is one of many the court made to accommodate a criminal defendant who asked for a speedy trial despite a general moratorium on jury trials in the court till January.
