As law firms have renewed or restated their commitment to social justice, including pro bono work, one Atlanta firm has proven to be a pacesetter in the region. While full 2020 numbers have yet to come in, Alston & Bird has led Southeast-based big firms in The American Lawyer's annual ranking of pro bono commitments for several years running.

'Not That Hard of a Sell at All'

When Mary Benton approached Alston & Bird's management in 2017 to suggest creating the new position of pro bono partner—and that she assume the role—no one seemed concerned about the loss of the her billable hours.
