In tossing out $54 million in judgments, a ruling by the Georgia Supreme Court has corporate defense lawyers celebrating and plaintiffs counsel worrying over what it means for the future of liability for companies whose employees commit crimes.

Chief Justice Harold Melton wrote for the majority Monday, affirming the Georgia Court of Appeals in throwing out two jury verdicts for catastrophic injuries to two women hit by a Ford Edge sport utility vehicle stolen off an Avis rental lot in downtown Atlanta.
