On the night of June 24, 98 people lost their lives when a 12-story beachfront condominium in Surfside, Florida, near Miami Beach, collapsed. The implosion of Champlain Towers South took less than 12 seconds, but the legal aftermath will roil on for years to come.

As rescue teams frantically searched the rubble, the list of accusations and potential defendants mounted. The condo owners’ association was targeted for ignoring expert advice that the building was structurally unsound. The city of Surfside was accused of minimizing the problem and failing to approve requests for parking so that repairs could be made.
