On Sept. 30, the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA) hosted its seventh annual GAPABA Gala at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. The 2020 gala was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 500 guests attended the event, which was emceed by MSNBC and NBC News anchor Richard Lui and included an awards presentation. The honorees were Monica Howard Douglas, senior vice president and general counsel of The Coca-Cola Co. (Women's Leadership Award); Peter Carter, executive vice president and chief legal officer of Delta Air Lines (General Counsel Diversity Champion Award); Byung J. "BJay" Pak, partner at Alston & Bird and former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia (Judge Alvin T. Wong Pioneer Award); and Jae Yeon Jeong, Emory University School of Law second-year student (2021 NAPABA Law Foundation Han C. Choi Scholarship). The GAPABA Law Foundation recognized the 2020 mini-grant recipients, and the organization also honored the victims of the March 16 Atlanta AAPI mass shootings, with many family members in attendance. GAPABA also highlighted the campaign for the AAPI Crime Victims & Education Fund (www.gapaba.org/donate), which recently was launched to raise funds for other #AAPI victims of hate and bias crimes, as well as create programs to dispel harmful stereotypes.
