During the Georgia General Assembly’s special session in 1981, it drafted a new state constitution. The Legislature adopted the Official Code of Georgia Annotated with an effective date of Nov. 1, 1982. I am confident that I am the only one who thinks it is a big deal that Georgia’s code turns 39 and is staring at the big 4-0.

As a daily user of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, I found myself wondering how the modern code came about. I quickly learned that the Official Code of Georgia Annotated is the evolutionary product of more than 150 years of statutory codification. When the modern code was adopted, the General Assembly repealed all predecessors.
