“FBU” is not a term I was taught in law school. Rather, I learned it while observing an otherwise great law firm implode.

The crisis this firm faced during an expansion cycle was that its associates were rapidly being lured away by substantial salary increases and signing bonuses. After one emergency meeting of the partners, one of them argued strongly against increasing salaries to counter the associates’ monetary incentive to leave.
