In the Southern Judicial Circuit, where two attorneys were battling to fill retiring Judge James Hardy’s seat, Catherine Mims Smith defeated William Whitesell with 55.30% of the vote, with all precincts reporting, according to the secretary of state’s website. The circuit includes Brooks, Colquitt, Echols, Lowndes and Thomas counties. Smith works as the circuit’s senior assistant district attorney, and Whitesell, a former prosecutor, owns his own law firm.
