A federal jury has issued a defense verdict in a lawsuit brought by an inmate’s daughter who alleged that her father’s death was due to negligence by the Rockdale County jail’s nurses, medical staff, deputies and the county sheriff.

The case’s roots go back to early 2012, when Thomas Colardo was arrested for failing to pay $40,000 of alimony to his ex-wife, according to a 2019 opinion by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit that cleared the case to proceed to a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. After being arrested in court on a contempt charge, he was subjected to a routine health screening at the Rockdale jail. Colardo admitted at the time that he had a history of diabetes and recently had eye surgery, the opinion said.
