SlideshowCanine CellMates, a nonprofit partnering with metro Atlanta justice systems in which they pair inmates with dogs, hosted its Cycle 28 class graduation ceremony Sept. 9 at the Fulton County Jail's Marietta Annex in Atlanta. It was the 28th class to graduate in the program's history but the first since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily shut down the program because of health and safety restrictions at the jail. Canine CellMates works with men incarcerated at the jail using shelter dogs. It is an intensive 10-week course, where carefully selected participants are assigned the responsibility of taking care of selected shelter dogs, with the goal of preparing them for adoption. Also, the inmates are taught valuable workforce and social-emotional skills to help them break the cycle of recidivism. In December, a separate graduation ceremony was held for Phase 1 of Canine CellMates' Beyond the Bars, a diversion program housed in Cobb County that partners with the Fulton County district attorney's office, the public defender's office and the court system to select eligible participants to participate post-release in a year-long rehabilitative program at Canine CellMates' facility, in lieu of further incarceration. Its mission is "utilizing shelter dogs to break the cycle of incarceration" and is dedicated to rescuing dogs and having a positive impact on incarcerated men. The first class of Beyond the Bars will graduate from the final phase on Thursday. According to a news release, Beyond the Bars is one of the first pre-trial diversion/sentencing alternative programs in the country that incorporates rescue dogs into an out-of-custody rehabilitative program. Seven inmates completed the 90-day first phase, and since its inception in 2013, more than 400 men have completed the Canine CellMates program inside the Fulton County Jail, and about 160 dogs have been adopted into forever homes. With the opening of the new facility, the program has expanded to Cobb County.
