Georgia had the second-highest ratio of the medical-malpractice lawsuits filed nationwide between 2012 and 2022, trailing only New York, according to a new study.

The study included both the total number of med-mal actions lodged in each state and a breakdown of the lawsuits filed in each state per every 10,000 residents. In that ratio breakdown, New York state ranked highest, with 19.03 suits per 10,000 residents, Georgia had 8.06 suits per 10,000, and New Jersey was third with 6.84 filings per 10,000. On the overall list, Georgia ranked 10th with 2,994 lawsuits filed, with a total cost of $1.3 billion.
