On May 25, the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA) hosted its ninth annual GAPABA Gala at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and celebrated the organization's 30th anniversary. More than 600 guests attended the sold-out event, which was emceed by CNN anchor and correspondent Amara Sohn Walker and included an awards presentation. The honorees were Jim Kerr, Southern Co. Gas's chairman, CEO and president (Diversity Champion Award); Georgia Supreme Court Justice Carla Wong McMillian (Judge Alvin T. Wong Pioneer Award); Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (President's Award); Vanessa Allen Sutherland, Phillips 66's executive vice president for government affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary (Corporate Leadership Award); Sean J. Young (staff attorney for the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Northern District of Georgia (GAPABA Rising Star Award); Amy Tu, president, international and chief administrative officer at Tyson Foods (Women's Leadership Award); Lucy Fato, executive vice president, general counsel and global head of communications and government affairs at AIG (Community Impact & Allyship Award); and Chloe Pan (UC Berkeley Law rising third-year student (National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) Law Foundation Han C. Choi Scholarship Award). The foundation recognized the seven 2023 grant recipients, which got a record combined amount of more than $116,000. It also honored three law student recipients of the 2023 Digumarthi Public Interest Scholarships, who each received $5,000 for their summer internships. The scholarships are named for the late Hemanth Digumarthi, a GAPABA past president. A portion of the funds raised at the gala will benefit the foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of GAPABA that provides grants to nonprofits providing charitable and educational services for Georgia's Asian-American community.
