In the midst of the U.S. Department of Justice's ongoing investigation into civil rights abuses in Georgia state prisons, a case against the state Department of Corrections has settled for $1.5 million for the death of an inmate allegedly caused by inadequate medical care.

The family of a woman who died in a north Georgia prison after just over one week in confinement had their concerns answered on Friday, as the state agreed to pay the total amount with no allocation between the wrongful death and estate claims for pre-death pain and suffering.
