Election and Political LawNorth Carolina's Board of Elections, as well as Boards of Elections for Durham and Watauga Counties, were hit with a voting rights lawsuit on Oct. 10 in North Carolina Middle District Court challenging the state's Senate Bill 747, which regulates the submission of ballots. The lawsuit was brought by Patterson Harkavy LLP and Elias Law Group on behalf of Voto Latino and other plaintiffs who argue that that the bill, which was enacted today, was intentionally designed to disenfranchise voters, as a provision centered on undeliverable mail penalizes same-day registrants who have taken all the needed steps to cast a ballot. The suit furthers contends that Latino, Black and younger citizens of the state will be harmed disproportionately.
