Last week the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence hosted its 32nd annual Candlelight Vigil at the Community Bandstand in the Decatur Square, and several members of the legal community were involved. The event took place on Purple Thursday, a National Day of Action during October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It honored those lost, celebrates those who have survived and asks attendees to renew their dedication to ending violence against women. Dionna Scott, a domestic violence survivor who now advocates and volunteers for the center, shared her story. As the event ended, with candles lit, attendees lined up to walk on stage and each read the name and age of someone who lost their life to domestic violence in 2022. A total of 154 victims ranging in age from unborn to 87 years old were remembered. An additional 42 perpetrators of violence also lost their lives, bringing the total to 196 domestic violence-related deaths last year. DeKalb County Solicitor General Donna Coleman-Stribling and many of her staff members also were in attendance to show their support for the victims. Coleman-Stribling and her staff work closely with the center throughout the year as she is involved with many of the cases of the survivors that they are assisting.
