For more than a century a process has been under way in American law that has led to the commoditization of many legal services.

There are several pieces to this continuing and accelerating process. I define “legal commodities” as legal services that have become so standardized in concept and execution that any one of a large number of law firms can produce a good enough version to meet the needs of most clients. As a result, law firms are increasingly being forced to compete on price for the opportunity to do such work.
