The University of Iowa College of Law did not discriminate against a candidate for a faculty position on the basis of his age, an Iowa jury found on Feb. 24.

Donald Dobkin sued the law school after he failed to secure an interview for a teaching position in 2008, when he was 55. Dobkin, of West Bloomfield, Mich., said that administrators told him his academic and professional record was impressive – he has taught at Central Michigan University and has practiced immigration law for more than three decades – but he was not granted an interview. He argued that the school offered jobs to two candidates with inferior qualifications, both of whom were under age 40.
