Three teenage girls stood solemnly before District Court Judge Sharon Gianelli in Nassau County, N.Y., on Wednesday as she accepted a prosecutor’s recommendation to drop the theft charges against them.

The resolution of their cases in the interest of justice was “an opportunity for you to not ever come back,” the Hempstead judge told them. “We’re collectively taking a chance on you, dismissing these charges with the hope you do not come back.”
