While marriage may be on the decline, foregoing a walk down the aisle does not mean that a break up cannot or will not end up in court.

Anecdotally, people may be choosing not to marry because of a past experience of divorce either as the child of divorce or a party to a divorce, a desire to avoid the perceived financial entanglements of marriage, a prohibition on their ability to marry, or an attempt to define a relationship on their own terms as opposed to a “traditional” marriage.
