Shale, a sedimentary rock abundant throughout much of the U.S., continues to be an important source for natural gas-one that’s fueling not just the energy industry but also some of the nation’s largest law firms.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld picked up key advisory roles on a $742 million deal announced this week in the onshore oil field services and natural gas sector, another $300 million shale deal received regulatory approval, and K&L Gates reshuffled its leadership to launch a new practice group devoted to capitalizing on energy and natural resources in the country’s lucrative shale deposits.
