Charles A. Mathis Jr., a former president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, died last week at the age of 57. His former law partner, David Walbert, recalled these memories of him.

I was a friend of Charles Mathis for a long time, long enough that neither of us could remember how we first met. But being a good friend of Charles was nothing unusual. Charles knew more people and had more friends than anyone else in Georgia. More remarkably, everyone liked Charles. He did not have enemies. Even when he whipped you in court beyond the limits of your client’s insurance policy, you could not dislike him. Charles was lovable, he was fun, and he was a passionate lover of life.
