By a 4� 3 vote, the Georgia Supreme Court on Monday struck down as unconstitutional a law that authorizes a state commission to approve charter schools.

The decision was a victory for local school boards that had challenged the 2008 law creating an alternative mechanism for the approval of charter schools, which are nonsectarian public schools that operate without the same restrictions as other public schools.
