More than five years after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina led to huge changes in the way public schools are run in New Orleans, a trial is about to begin in a class-action lawsuit seeking damages for thousands of school employees who lost their jobs after the storm.

There are only a handful of plaintiffs named in the suit, including a principal, teachers and a custodian, but a victory would lead to hearings on damages for an estimated 7,000 school workers, said Willie Zanders, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
