A federal judge in Atlanta on Monday peppered attorneys for the state of Georgia with a series of sharp questions concerning the legislative intent behind a stringent immigration law slated to take effect July 1.
“What do Gov. Nathan Deal and the General Assembly say is the purpose of the statute To drive all undocumented citizens and illegal aliens out of the state” U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr. asked repeatedly of the state’s attorneys during a hearing on a request by a coalition of civil rights organizations and labor unions for an injunction to bar implementation of the law while its constitutionality is litigated.
