Deal lawyer William C. “Cal” Smith III jumped from a partnership at Troutman Sanders to one at King & Spalding last week.

The mergers and acquisitions lawyer, 42, handled several large deals at Troutman, including the 2007 cross-border merger between two giant forest products and newsprint rivals, Bowater Inc. and Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., to create AbitibiBowater, a publicly traded company with revenue of $7.9 billion at the time of the merger. Troutman represented Bowater, based in South Carolina, and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison represented Abitibi, based in Montreal.
