If he wins a second chance at being governor, Roy Barnes won’t change a part of his judge selection policy that caused controversy during his first term: Lawyers who donate to his campaign will continue to be eligible for a judgeship.
Barnes, who faces Republican Nathan Deal in the general election, said that lawyers should be allowed to participate in the political process through campaign contributions, even if they intend to later seek a judgeship. Barnes was criticized during his previous term for some appointments, such as naming Marvin S. Arrington Sr. to the Fulton County Superior Court. Arrington contributed $10,000 to Barnes’ re-election campaign four days before he was interviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission.
