Thomas L. Sager, the influential senior vice president and general counsel of DuPont, recently visited Atlanta to speak at a fundraiser organized by The Law Pipeline Inc. He spoke on diversity in the legal profession. Sager, a champion in this area for decades, remains optimistic, even in the face of the recent ABA survey that revealed the serious blow the economy has dealt to lawyer diversity. His belief is that broad diversity will be achieved because market factors are beginning to demand it. Pursuit of a diverse legal work force is rapidly becoming a critical component of competitive success.
Law firms are comfortable competing for business based on their lawyers’ technical expertise and their law firm “brand.” To the discomfort of many firms, they also are increasingly competing on the basis of their price structure. Efficiency, billing flexibility and the ability to set and keep to a budget have all become critical competitive factors. Changing to meet this challenging new market is hard. According to Sager, the firm has even more to do in order to secure quality clients and keep them coming back.
