SAVANNAH, Ga. AP – Under extraordinary orders from the U.S. Supreme Court, a federal judge Wednesday began hearing new testimony in the case of a Georgia death row inmate whose attorneys say they can prove he’s innocent of the 1989 slaying of a Savannah police officer.
Troy Anthony Davis listened in the courtroom as two men testified they lied to a jury in 1991 when they said Davis confessed to killing Mark MacPhail, an off-duty police officer who was shot as he rushed to help a homeless man being attacked.
