Lawmakers and representatives from county governments and the trial bar are discussing a plan that could more than double the amount lawyers pay to file cases in superior courts.

As the state experiences one of the worst budget crises in history, lawmakers at the Gold Dome are considering every possible way to increase revenue to pay for schools, Medicaid, prisons, the courts and other core functions of state government. After Gov. Sonny Perdue reached an agreement earlier this week with hospitals to impose a temporary 1.45 percent tax on hospital beds, other groups are now expected to agree to hikes in taxes or user fees.
