Leaders of the environmental group that forced the city of Atlanta to overhaul its sewage systems are pushing Gov. Sonny Perdue to veto a bill that makes it easier for local governments to build water reservoirs.
House Bill 406 will jeopardize the ability of Atlanta to pay for its sewage overhaul, which it must do to complete satisfy a 1998 federal court order, and unnecessarily antagonize Alabama and Florida in the long-running water wars, said Juliet Cohen, general counsel to the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, and Sally Bethea, the group’s executive director.
