John G. Levi, newly appointed chairman of the board of the national Legal Services Corp., testified before Congress on April 27 that one-sixth of the population of the United States-those with annual incomes less than $44,000 for a family of four-qualifies for free civil legal aid. The LSC doles out funds for legal aid organizations across the nation, including those in Georgia.
As of 2008, one-third of Georgians lived below that income level, according to Census figures. One-third. After the recession of the last year and a half, that number is even higher.
