Georgia lawmakers are taking a hard look at increasing dozens of court filing fees to raise funds for court operations and help fill in huge gaps in the state’s budget.

What’s likely to be fought over at the state Capitol is whether county governments or the state will control the revenue from these higher fees. One bill, introduced by Sen. Preston W. Smith, R-Rome, would increase the base court filing fee by $100 and deposit the money in the state treasury. But county commissioners have prepared legislation to let the counties keep and use money from higher fees.
