I started my career at Texas Rural Legal Aid, representing low-income Texans with a variety of legal problems. My supervising attorney and mentor, John Cook, was famous for handling an enormous caseload of divorces, real property disputes and consumer cases, and doing it with a smile on his face.
John’s favorite cases were adoptions. Each time he came back from an adoption hearing, John would say, “Adoption is a beautiful thing.” Indeed, in stark contrast to most of the legal problems we dealt with on a daily basis, the adoption cases were a breath of fresh air, usually ending with a photograph of a smiling judge with her arm around a little kid in a bow tie.
