RALEIGH, N.C. AP – North Carolina failed Wednesday to land the large federal stimulus grant it wanted to modernize a key stretch of Interstate 85 through the central Piedmont, but state officials say they’ve got an alternate plan to begin bridging the funding gap.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the state will receive $10 million to help replace the 55-year-old Yadkin River Bridge, double the number of lanes and make other improvements on I-85 in Davidson and Rowan counties. That’s far less than the $300 million that Gov. Beverly Perdue’s administration had sought – the maximum amount that a state could seek for a project.
