The widow of slain federal agent David Wilhelm watched intently Wednesday as attorneys for six current or former Fulton County Sheriff’s Department employees told appeals judges that their clients should not be sued for mistakes they made in letting Brian Nichols escape from the Fulton County Courthouse on March 11, 2005.

Candee Wilhelm’s husband was killed hours after Nichols, on trial for rape, broke free from a guard and gunned down Superior Court Judge Rowland W. Barnes, court reporter Julie Ann Brandau and Deputy Sgt. Hoyt Teasley. Nichols shot David Wilhelm, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, as he worked on his home in Buckhead.
