When, for the first time in its 54-year history, Columbus-based insurance provider Aflac Inc. decided to acquire another company, Alston & Bird lawyers were on hand to help.

Aflac, known for its loudmouthed duck mascot, closed on the $100 million purchase of Columbia, S.C.-based Continental American Insurance Co., or CAIC, on Sept. 30. The deal was funded with internal capital.
