The Supreme Court of Georgia favored police seeking to protect their files from the prying eyes of the news media in a 4-3 decision that highlighted a release of 33 opinions on Monday.

The court’s majority broadly construed an exemption in the state’s Open Records Act in siding with the Athens-Clarke County government in its dispute with an Athens newspaper. The newspaper had sought access to police records on the unsolved 1992 killing of a University of Georgia student.
