Atlanta’s Troutman Sanders and Washington-based litigation boutique Ross, Dixon & Bell won’t officially merge until Jan. 1, but their union was informally sealed months ago over a glass of Napa Valley chardonnay at two in the morning.

They had spent the day golfing in the Buick Invitational Pro-Am at Torrey Pines, and were winding down from a long dinner with some Ross Dixon clients. Fitzgerald easily recalls the conversation with Bell on the deck that January night: “He said, ‘I think we can do business together, Kevin.’”
