Within the last month, three criminal defense lawyers have needed their own representation to face accusations about overbilling and other alleged improprieties from their work as appointed counsel for indigent defendants.
On May 12, a Gwinnett County grand jury indicted Lawrenceville solo practitioner Christopher T. Adams on 35 counts of theft, criminal solicitation and making false statements. The grand jury that day also accused another Lawrenceville lawyer, Sandra M. Clarke, of 43 counts of theft, some of which involved funds that authorities said should have been paid to her law firm for indigent defense work.
