The Daily Report held its first-ever pro bono awards Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency to honor some of the Atlanta lawyers who give their time to those who need legal services but can’t afford a lawyer.

“There is a public covenant between the state of Georgia and us as lawyers,” said former Gov. Roy E. Barnes, the event’s keynote speaker, who spent six months volunteering at the Atlanta Legal Aid Society after leaving the Governor’s Mansion. “Only we can charge for legal services. Wal-Mart and Target and Marshall’s and Publix and Kroger-they can’t get into the legal business.”
